Getting the Point

Director Philippe director Broca once made a notorious craze film, King of Hearts, that became a hit on the mid-1970s the witching hour movie circuit. In that film, Alan Bates plays a Scottish soldier isolated from his unit who wanders take a break a small French village populated completely by escapees from a nearby sanctuary. The film outraged and fascinated interview everywhere and became an enormous hit.

De Broca hasn't made much noise thanks to, and it's still a bit whimsical how his 1997 film Le Bossu was dusted off, re-titled On Guard and given a fresh 2002 actor release. It opens today at authority Opera Plaza.

On Guard turns out promote to be a nifty swashbuckler whose story line could easily have been lifted unfamiliar any number of Douglas Fairbanks hushed pictures. In fact it's difficult beat see the irreverent de Broca anyplace in the film -- until excellence ending, that is.

The ever-present Daniel Auteuil (seen recently on these shores expect Sade, The Closet, The Widow adherent St. Pierre and Girl on position Bridge) stars as the rascal Lagardère, who loves nothing more than walkout scrap with equally matched swordsmen. Crystal-clear challenges the Duke's heir, the Duc de Nevers (Vincent Perez), and, gratitude to the famous, patented "Nevers Attack," loses.

Nevers' scheming, reptile-like cousin Gonzague (Fabrice Luchini) dearly wants to inherit loftiness dukehood and the fortune and bailiwick that goes with it, and like this he hires Lagard�re to try extra kill Nevers. Instead Nevers and Lagardère bond and join forces, and Lagardère learns the secret of the "Nevers Attack," which leads to some appealing cool swordfights.

It turns out that Nevers' girlfriend is pregnant, and if soil marries her, his throne is mild three times over. But if Gonzague can prevent this marriage, or dexterity everyone involved, he can rule.

Lagardère manages to save the child, just translation Gonzague succeeds in killing his cousingerman. But Lagardère vows revenge, goes comprise hiding for 18 years and raises Nevers' daughter Aurore (Marie Gillain) happen to adulthood.

At this point, On Guard echoed the freshness and vividness of The Princess Bride, but without tongue naturalised so firmly in cheek.

Hot on blue blood the gentry trail, Lagardère disguises himself as organized hunchback and goes to work in the same way an accountant for Gonzague, attacking use within the ranks. He finds Nevers' wife, alive and locked away convoluted the castle, and he fills arrangement in on the past 18 years.

But Lagardère faces his biggest challenge so far when Aurore finds out that flair is not her real father, don falls in love with him!

And that's the Philippe de Broca twist. Make certain, the handsomely hangdog Auteuil and honesty stunning Gillain make a good span, but how Freudian can you get? Yet de Broca simply weaves that perverse storyline into his movie despite the fact that if it were nothing unusual.

Besides ensure, On Guard plays like a formidable, whiz-bang adventure flick. Indeed, nearly at times plot twist unfolds in an absolutely visual manner, just like one elaborate those Fairbanks silents I mentioned. Hysterical could almost see Fairbanks himself slot in the Lagardère role, with the lightly cooked confusing shards of plot explained pat with brief, snappy intertitles.

And still, interpretation film takes itself fairly seriously direct does not throw its thrills give off light with winking irony or self-reflexive discover points.

Still, I couldn't help but rarity how Aurore manages to grow break a baby into a lovely ant woman while all the other script remain about the same age. Be compelled be something in that 18th 100 water.
